Joann Manson, the chief investigator of Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, said, “Vital is the first large -scale and long -term random test that shows that vitamin D supplements protect telomeres and preserve the length of telomeres.” It is especially important because it shows the benefits of vitamin D to reduce inflammation and reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as immune diseases. ”
The telomeres are made of repeated DNA or basic pairs that prevents decomposition or fusion with other chromosomes. The shortening of telomeres is a natural part of aging and is associated with increasing risk of various age -related diseases.
Some short -term studies have suggested that vitamin D or omega -3 fatty acid supplements may help to support telomeres, but the results did not match. VITAL tracked US women over 55 years of age with a random, dual blindness, and placebo -controlled test of vitamin D3 (2,000 IU/Sun) and omega 3 fatty acids (1 g/day). The important telomerical sub -study included 1,054 of these participants, and the telomeric length of white blood cells was evaluated in the baseline and second and fourth grade.
Vitamin D3 supplements have been greatly reduced in four years compared to taking placebo, which has been significantly reduced to prevent the same aging compared to placebo. Omega 3 fatty acid replenishment did not significantly affect the length of telomeres during the follow -up period.
