Case of weight loss drug addiction
In 2021, the New Jersey Poison Control Center recorded 29 GLP-1 exposure cases. By 2024, the number increased to 189.
CHOP’s poison control center saw 95 cases in 2023. In just a year, the number was almost doubled at almost 192. As of this month, there were already 126 exposure to this year.
Local increase reflects what happens At the national levelAccording to the National Poison Data System of the American Center, 8,501 GLP-1 exposure balloons occurred in 2024 at 1,090 cases in 2020.
GLP-1 exposure cases include people who are suspected of addiction or those who are suffering from side effects or symptoms after taking the wrong dose of drugs, or calls when taking them as prescribed.
“Then they have unexpected nausea, vomiting, symptoms, and diarrhea, and sometimes call us,” Look, should we really worry? Do we have to stop it? ”
Experts say the exposure is rapidly increasing, but the seriousness of the case and addiction has not changed over time and is not worse compared to the past GLP-1 exposure.
After discussing with experts at POCLE Control Centers, Jaworski and Ruck said most people could avoid visiting the emergency room and monitor symptoms at home. In rare cases, people go to the hospital.
But Jaworski said his team found other people on trends, including how to buy complex or counterfeit GLP-1 drugs through online marketplace and social media.
“Some of them can include that there are things they don’t know,” he said. “Then there was a report that people were seriously sick.”
Jaworski said that he was originally receiving a phone call from people taking medicine prescribed by his family or friends. Taking another drug can lead to risk of unexpected side effects and health complications, he said.
