Utah County, Utah — One new case of measles has been confirmed in Utah County.
The Utah County Health Department reported the new cases Friday morning and urged residents to cooperate with public health officials.
Health officials say they are investigating the case and working to prevent further spread.
“We appreciate the cooperation of community members who responded to our calls, worked closely with disease investigators, got tested when recommended, and followed quarantine guidelines,” said Executive Director Eric Edwards. “These efforts are critical to protecting others and preventing additional cases.”
Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes, health authorities said.
Officials said symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, bloodshot eyes and a characteristic rash that spreads throughout the body. They say unvaccinated people are at greatest risk.
“The Utah County Health Department urges all residents and their families to ensure their measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is up to date. Individuals who believe they may have been exposed or are experiencing symptoms should call their health care provider before visiting a clinic, urgent care or emergency room,” officials said when reporting measles cases in Utah County.
