- Kelly Benthall has seen improved workplace culture for 30 years, but has already been damaged.
- Last year, she decided to retire early to improve mental, physical and emotional health.
- After her first retirement, the doctor recorded an improvement.
My plan was always retired to 65. Grind, climb the ladder and finally enjoy freedom. But the plan changes. In particular, it cannot be ignored when the body starts a flashing warning.
At the age of 53, I retired early with my husband. We retired not because we planned all the details three severely, but because the cost of staying in the rat race (mental, physical, emotional) was too high. Work was always the source of pride, but it was the source of stress and sometimes serious health.
For more than 30 years, I have helped a variety of companies to explore strategic changes, from new companies to giants like shell and Chebron. I was more responsible, absorbing pressure and rarely expecting the price than it was reasonable for decades. Over time, I internalized stress as a normal part of success until my body stopped.
Fast lanes and tolls of companies
The workplace has changed a lot in the men’s ruling industry, especially in the early 2000s, especially in the male ruling industry, such as oil and gas. At that time, I was a minority as a woman, and the people who put it at the top endured the constant pressure. Some have become equality champions. Others anticipated that fellow women would have difficulties, and they believed that pain was a consciousness of passing.
Some female leaders respected my work, but other female leaders saw it as a threat.
During the orientation in one of the first jobs, I mentioned the experience in the speech to the CEO. He asked me to write his sales meeting, but my female boss suggested that he is not interested in him. I later contacted the CEO again, and we have partnerships for several years.
And there was an incredible #metoo moment that I couldn’t stand. One of the bosses thought it was appropriate to share thanks to the Playboy Center Fold during the meeting.
As the company implemented more powerful policies and responsibilities, the culture has been shifted over time. The culture was improved when it reached the last year in corporate life. But the damage has already been completed.
Working for years in depletion mode has been adjusted to expect the worst in a safer environment.
The moment my body fought
Despite the disappointment, I stepped on the gas. I worked hard at any time and sometimes spent 90 hours. I believed that if I just worked smart and quickly, I could surpass stress.
I am wrong.
One day, I collapsed at work. My blood pressure has soared to 220/180, and I ended up in an ambulance. EMTS gave me nitroglycerin but nothing happened. I heard that one of them was “oh” before instructing the driver to move faster.
It would have been my morning call. Instead, I doubled.
It was not sustainable.
Change coach that could not be changed
I took it to coach others to accept the change.
When I was a problem with others, the advice given to many others seemed easy. “As I said, do what I do.” However, as I suffered from burning out and worsened my health, I realized that I did not like my own lesson. I have a career in helping people, but I was afraid of the same leap.
There was no until I talked to the coach. Free consultation, “I have no time” almost canceled -I saw my life from a different point of view.
She asked me a simple question. “Finally, when did you finally scared you?”
This question blocked me alert. I spent years in the controlled world of danger, calculating all the movements and relieving all possible failures. But fear? Types that come from unknown from bold places to interfere with the current state? It’s been a long time since I felt it.
At that moment, I unlocked something in me. I remembered who I was -person who took a chance. I once flourished for a new challenge and started a high steak project that was leading the team through uncertainty and uncertainty. But I spent several years in the circulation of stress and obligations and misunderstood the endurance of achievement.
“Sometimes you must collapse to invade.” The voice in my head whispered. It was the moment I decided to retire.
Retirement healed me
Finally, when I was out of my career, I couldn’t fully grasp the tolls I took on my body. But retirement did not cure me, but gave me a new way of life. My husband and I have accepted the free travel, a quiet morning, a commuting morning, a quiet morning, a quiet morning, a quiet morning for a long walk in a new city.
It wasn’t until I saw a difference until my first retirement. The blood pressure was low and the stress marker was low.
My doctor told me again after seeing my statistics. “Your job tried to kill you.”
Avoid the worm traps
Retirement did not seek my health. Finally, I realized that it felt as if I was taking out the highway. It wires my brain again. What I once called “Drive” was actually an endless sprint toward fatigue.
The work environment has been improved in some ways, but the influence of the years spent on continuing stress does not disappear overnight. People like me who are accustomed to overwork and constant pressure struggle to recognize how healthy speed actually looks.
If you feel trapped in a stressful career, ask yourself. What are you really working for? When will you have enough? How long can I keep my body stress? And what is most important is what do you prevent changes?
I would like to ask these questions faster. But the good news is that everyone needs to wait until the body stops.
