Mackenzie Scott’s big donations enhance New York’s unique organizations, which can change the lives of more people who are struggling with mental health problems.
The former wife of JEFF Bezos, the founder of Amazon.com, provided $ 12 million in Fountain House as part of a pledge to give up most wealth after divorce in 2019.
Through donations, Fountain House can expand the impact of mental health is an urgent interest, and establish a philosophy that mental diagnosis is not the total amount of the total amount that can be a patient.
Focusing only on the disease can severely improve the patient’s activities, social interactions and quality of life.
Fountain House Story
In the late 1940s, the Rockland State Hospital’s psychiatric patients in the Orangeberg, New York, founded a self -help club to provide mutual support. When they were released in Rockland, they found the same kind of support system, so Club members decided to establish a new group outside.
They called their clubs ‘we are not alone’ or ‘Wana’. The stage of the New York Public Library in New York City was used as the first place of WANA, but in 1948 the charity woman donated a fund for the purchase of permanent housing with the National Jewish Women’s Council.
They chose a red brick building at West 47th Street in New York City, known as “Hell ‘S Kitchen. The building was baptized as a “fraction house” due to the fountain of the courtyard.
While doing Fraction house Many former patients were welcomed by hiring the first mental health expert by 1955 until 1955, hiring John Beard as manager, to lead a powerful intersection of mental and philosophy.
BEARD has expanded the time of the facility and began to participate in members’ skills and passion during operation. He hired employees, maintained its premises, helped to operate office work, and invited food for ‘Club House’ members to serve and serve.
As new demands have arisen, we talked to club members and participated in the solution.
As a result, everyone had a greater participation and there was an intimate friendship between members and employees. There was a variation effect on all individuals’ self -images and organization itself.
Today, Fountain House has about 1,400 active members. It also runs a second location with about 200 members in New York and Bronx. (One -third of the Fountain House members were homeless at some point in their lives.) Fountain House and its philosophy were also used as a model of the modern clubhouse movement, with over 300 facilities around the world.
