Latest 2nd Update Yesterday, at the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in Saudi Arabia, the World Health Organization (WHO) has reported four new cases since September 6, 2024, and two of them are fatal.
MERS is often a rich respiratory infection caused by MERS Corona Virus (MERS-COV), which causes symptoms such as heat, shortness of breath and cough. It spreads between camels and usually can infect humans through direct contact with camels. Viruses rarely spread for each person.
Among the four infected men between 27 and 78 years old, there were all medical conditions, one exposed to the virus of the hospital, and one indirectly exposed to camel and their vivid (unhidroidal) milk. There was no medical worker. This incident was reported in Saudi Arabia’s hail (2), Riyad (1) and Eastern (1).
Some MERS-COV-specific vaccines and treatments are being developed, but vaccines or certain treatments are not available at present.
The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Health has not found any other secondary infections along the close contact of men. The last case was reported on February 4, 2025.
“The notification of these four cases does not change the overall risk assessment that is maintained from the world and region to a gentle state,” WHO said. “This case shows that the virus continues to threaten in a country that circulates in the camel of Droma, especially in the camel in the Middle East.”
36% of cases fatalities since 2012
Since MERS was first discovered in humans in Saudi Arabia in 2012, it has been 36%in the 66%case of 2,618 people in 27 countries in six regions. In Saudi Arabia, 84%were identified in most cases. Since 2019, MERS infection has not been reported outside the Middle East.
“Many MERS-COV-specific vaccines and treatments are being developed, but vaccines or specific treatments are not available at present,” WHO wrote. “Treatment remains in the state of managing symptoms depending on the seriousness of the disease.”
