Shingles vaccines have a low risk of dementia

summation: A new study shows that if you are vaccinated for shingles, the risk of dementia can be reduced by 20% for seven years. This conclusion is from Wales’ natural experiments determined by the date of birth.

Researchers usually use the strict statistical methods found in economics to separate the effects of shingles vaccines from other factors. Their research suggests that everyday immunity can play an unexpected role in protecting brain health as it ages.

Main fact:

  • 20% risk reduction: Shingles vaccination has lowered the risk of dementia by 20% over seven years.
  • Natural experimental design: The eligibility of the vaccine allows unique causal analysis based on the exact date of birth.
  • New prevention path: The results point to the potential public health strategy to reduce the risk of dementia.

According to a recent study published, vaccinations to prevent shingles also reduce the risk of developing dementia in the second half. nature.

This conclusion is based on the analysis of data collected in connection with the introduction of shingles immune programs that started in Wales in 2013.

Economists with special expertise in statistical analysis have greatly contributed to the research.

Dr. Juhannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), the chief author of this study, said, “We were able to create legs between these two fields by applying our functions to medical data.

With Dr. MIN XIE, a doctoral researcher at Heidelberg Global Health Institute, he showed that shingles vaccinations were related to a 20 % reduction in new dementia diagnosis for seven years.

As mentioned in this article, “Natural Experiment on the Effects of Herpes for Dementia” can raise a variety of new possibilities for dementia.

Electronic health records for Wales supply standards for statistical analysis

Dr. Min XIE confirmed the basics of “Natural Experiments” by introducing a herpes journey vaccination program about two years ago. The qualification of vaccines in this program was determined by the exact date of birth.

Those born before September 2, 1933 were not automatically lived, and those born after September 2, 1933 were eligible to receive vaccines.

Eyting said, “We can talk about natural experiments in this situation because we provide opportunities to compare people who are not 80 years old and those who are not 80 years old in this environment.

Since the individual of the research cohort was a few weeks away, researchers could assume that vaccination is the only factor that distinguishes the group.

Eyting said, “We have investigated the risk of dementia for the next seven years.

One of the main goals of analysis was to identify potential and effects rather than just correlation. In other words, researchers were looking for a causal relationship between the shingles vaccine and the risk of dementia, and not randomly connected between the two factors.

In economics, thresholds and target dates (in this case) are often used to test causal effects using regression discontinuity design.

EYTing added, “This method is widely used in economics, but it is not yet recognized as a tool for clinical research.”

From his point of view, regression discontinuity analysis offers many opportunities to evaluate the effects of public health measures.

Markus Eyting is a post -doctoral researcher of Mainz University’s Gutenberg School of Management and Economics (GSME) and Leibniz Institute for Financial Research Safe of Frankfurt.

His research focuses on experimental methods, surveys and management data, and studies the interaction and personal decisions of applications related to health, discrimination and machine learning.

In addition, this study was Dr. Simon Heß from Vienna Economic and Business University, which supported data analysis with economic methodology and researchers at Stanford University.

EYTING won the 2023 Young Economist Award for papers on the cause of discrimination from the European Economic Association (EEA).

Abstract

Natural experiments on the effects of shingles ancestors for dementia

Neuropolic herpes virus can be involved in the development of dementia. In addition, vaccines can have an important target of immunological effects. Here we aim to determine the effect of vivid infection herpes ancestors of vaccination of dementia diagnosis.

In order to provide causal relationships, unlike the correlation evidence, we use the fact that in Wales, the qualifications of the Jostor vaccine were determined based on the exact date of birth of the individual.

Those born before September 2, 1933 were inadequate and inappropriate for a lifetime, while those born after September 2, 1933 were eligible to receive vaccines for more than a year.

Using large -scale electronic health record data, we have increased from 0.01%to 47.2%of patients who have been vaccinated for one week, from 0.01%to 47.2%of patients who are only one week.

Born one week before September 2, 1933, an individual, apart from this big difference in the chances of receiving an ancestor vaccine, will not be systematically different from those born one week later.

Using these comparison groups in the regression discontinuity design, we receive an ancestor vaccine for seven years of follow -up dementia diagnosis of 3.5 percentage points (95% trust section (CI) = 0.6–7.1,, 0.6–7.1, blood= 0.019), 20.0% (95% CI = 6.5–33.4).

This protective effect was stronger for women than men. We successfully identify the discovery in other population (the merger of the UK and Wales) using the other population (the combined population of the UK and Wales) and the other types of data (death certificate) and dementia, but less dependent on the dementia diagnosis of the health care system (dementia as a major cause).

Using unique natural experiments, this study provides evidence of dementia prevention or delayed dementia from journal vaccination, which is more confusing and less vulnerable to prejudice than conventional associated evidence.
