UNDATED (WKRC) – Long-term use of melatonin may be a sign of underlying heart problems, according to a study published and reported Monday. NBC News.
Researchers did not say that melatonin supplements cause heart problems, but they did say that regular use may indicate pre-existing heart problems.
The study analyzed five years of electronic health records from more than 130,000 adults. People who took melatonin regularly for at least a year were nearly twice as likely to develop heart failure compared to those who did not use the supplement. NBC News.
Additionally, participants were twice as likely to die and three times as likely to be hospitalized due to illness during the study period.
