The study suggested that weight loss drugs such as Ozempic can reduce the risk of dementia by one -third.

Scientists at the University of Florida have investigated the data by 90,000 people over 50 with type 2 diabetes. They found that those who take the next-generation weight loss injection, known as GLP-1 agent, have a 33 % lower risk of diagnosing dementia compared to other drugs.

They said that Semaglutide, which is sold according to the brand name Ozempic and WEGOVY, said, “It is significantly related to the decrease in the risk of dementia.”

Semaglutide was first developed to treat diabetes, but is now widely used for weight loss and has more than 500,000 people in taking weight loss drugs in the UK.

This study published in JAMA Lowering another kind of blood-diabetes drugs, SGLT2S, has also significantly reduced the risk of dementia.

Scientists are not sure if weight loss drugs can prevent dementia, but they have linked with the brain’s inflammatory reduction and that the drug can promote the formation of new brain cells.

Dr. Leah Mursaleen, the clinical research director of Alzheimer Research UK, said: “The results of this study are increasing evidence that GLP-1RA and SGLT-2 inhibitors can reduce the risk of dementia.

“We don’t know why this medicine offers protective effects, and we need more research to understand how it affects the brain.”

She added that the result is “interesting”, but it is important to consider whether other factors can affect overall health, income or education.

A separate study of a team at the University of Galway supported the discovery of reducing the risk of dementia. The data obtained from 26 clinical trials were evaluated and GLP-1 drugs were “statistically related to significant reductions in dementia.” This study surveyed 160,000 test data.

A million people in the UK have dementia and there are no effective treatments at present, so preventive drugs are desperately needed.

Clinical trials are underway to assess whether drugs such as Semaglutide, such as Semaglutide, are protected from dementia.

Professor Masud Husain, a neurologist at Oxford University, said: “This new post-flavor analysis suggests that the new afterglow, especially Semagluide, can reduce the risk of dementia in type 2 diabetes.

“But we need data from the prospective test to provide more powerful evidence. The wider question of the protection of dementia in people without diabetes is actually interesting and is the focus of some ongoing clinical trials.”

Dr. Richard Oakley, the head of the Alzheimer’s Society, said: “Both studies have found a connection between GLP-1RAS and dementia risks, but only one person found SGLT2, a different kind of diabetes drug.

“More research is needed to properly understand how to reduce the risk of dementia, especially as you get older, especially as you get older.”

Professor Tara Spires-Jones at the University of Edinburg, the University of Edinburg, the University of Edinburg, the group leader of the British Dementia Research Institute, and the chairman of the British New Science Association. “It is encouraging” about the potential to lower the risk of dementia.

But she added: “This drug has side effects and cannot prevent dementia.

“Research has an important limit, including relatively short tracking time. Future work is important for understanding how risk factors such as diabetes and obesity increase the risk of dementia to develop effective treatment and preventive strategies.”
