“Lobular breast cancer, or invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC), is on the rise among American women, according to a new American Cancer Society special report.
Key results:
- ~11% of breast cancers in the United States are ILC.
- The incidence rate increases rapidly compared to other breast cancers
- By 2025, approximately 33,600 diagnoses are expected in the United States.
- Tumors tend to be larger at diagnosis and, in advanced cases, have lower long-term survival rates.
“Our study highlights the need for more information about lobular cancer overall, from genetic studies to clinical trial data, to help identify the growing number of women with this cancer,” said Rebecca Siegel, MPH, chief scientific officer for cancer surveillance research at the American Cancer Society and senior author of the study. “We can improve outcomes,” he said.
Next steps for research and management:
- Raising awareness of the unique clinical features of ILC
- Prioritize research into detection and treatment strategies.
- Ensure equitable treatment and access across all breast cancer subtypes.”
