Main message
Reasons to invest in breastfeeding:
- Breastfeeding is a wise economy, not just health intervention. Each dollar invested in breastfeeding support is estimated to return to $ 35 from public health and productivity gains.
- Breastfeeding protects children’s health and improves survival, especially in the first month of birth. In addition to essential nutrition, it also provides important antibodies that protect them from many common diseases such as diarrhea, pneumonia and infection.
- The influence of breastfeeding is expanded beyond infancy. Breastfeeding children are less likely to be overweight or obese, and there is a low risk of developing type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases. Mothers also benefit -breastfeeding reduces the risk of postpartum bleeding, breast cancer and ovary cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
- The right investment allows the state to greatly increase the exclusive breastfeeding rate. Today, about 10% more infants have breastfeeding for the first six months compared to 2013, and some countries have increased by 20% over the same period.
