Mites paralysis is rare and there is no official monitoring of conditions, so we don’t know how many cases occur every year. It is recorded worldwide and is more commonly seen in children and adult men.

Paralysis is caused by neurotoxins of tick saliva, which is associated with 40 species. In North America, most of them are associated with American dog ticks and Rocky mountain ticks.
If the condition is caught early and the tick is removed, paralysis is reversed and usually recovers completely within 24 hours.
