They recruited 52 healthy college students from DAEGU and divided them into two groups. One of the 27 subjects chewed the paraffin wax gum. The second group of 25 was asked to chew on wooden medical tongue depression.

Subjects chewed for five minutes, and the researchers used magnetic resonance spectroscopy to measure glutathione levels in the anterior Singant cortex, a brain area for cognitive control before and after chewing. All subjects also conducted a cognitive test before and after activity.


Researchers reported that the glutathione levels were significantly higher in the target, especially in wood chewing groups, especially when compared to the gum chewing group.


In combination with the results of cognitive tests, the increase in glutathione concentration was positively correlated with memory function. In other words, people with chewing trees and having larger glutathion boosts also performed better in the test.

Wood seemed to give more benefits than paraffin wax gum, but this study also tested only two materials chewing for 5 minutes. Future studies can also investigate the wider range of materials and chewing duration.
