Since April 6, 2025, we have been expanding the list of pathogens registered in the UK and the lab.
Change will strengthen regional and national surveillance and support immediate response to the occurrence of infectious diseases.
This blog post provides more information about changes and important links.
Health Protection Notification Regulations
Under the Health Protection (Health Protection) Regulations 2010 (HPNR), all doctors (registered medical workers) must report the unintentional diseases to the appropriate officers of the local authorities (usually the UK health security agency).
There is also a legal requirement for the diagnostic laboratory, which handles a British human sample and uses a certain pathogen on UKHSA.
Reporting to known diseases is an important public health tool that informs local and national monitoring of serious infectious diseases. Through notifications we can take immediate public health measures to prevent and control infection. You can Learn about the entire list of diseases known here.
Change of registered medical professionals in the UK
Starting April 6, 2025, medical experts should also inform patients if they have one of the following.
- Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS)
- Influenza
- Varicella
- Congenital syphilis
- Newborn Herpes

Expands a list of known diseases
We have prepared recommendations with the Ministry of Health and Welfare to evaluate the monitoring ability of the present and emerging infectious diseases and to update the regulations to strengthen regional and national surveillance. These changes follow public consultations on legislative updates.
Data use
Some notifications require immediate public health measures of the health protection team (e.g., antibiotics, vaccinations, or separation advice are provided to the contacts. Other notifications can strengthen surveillance at the region and national level and evaluate the effects of various public health interventions, such as vaccine programs.
Influence on patients
For this purpose, information shared with our team is confidential and protected by general data protection regulations (GDPR). This information is to provide information on public health response and to understand how to spread the disease and how to prevent them.
