EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – More than 24 million Americans receive health insurance through the Affordable Care Act, and more than 90% of enrollees receive federal tax credits to help reduce costs.
As the government shutdown continues, many Wisconsin residents could face higher prices.
“Prices across the board are going to go up in 2026, so it’s very important for people to think very carefully about what their family needs to cover,” said Reba Rice, chief community officer at Northlakes Community Clinic.
Wisconsin residents may be surprised to see higher costs once open enrollment begins. Those prices could rise, especially for low-income families, if lawmakers don’t expand federal subsidies to cut costs. Meanwhile, local leaders are emphasizing the importance of health insurance.
“We know they have to choose one thing over another, and sometimes that’s having their health insurance removed,” Rice said. “But because you never know what’s going to happen, and because health care is so expensive, it’s really important as a way to protect yourself financially.”
The Eau Claire City-County Health Department estimates that about 8% of Eau Claire County residents are uninsured and about 11% of the county receives Medicaid coverage. The health department said about 6% of counties are enrolled in the marketplace plan. Rice said she’s concerned that people may not get the care they need if they can’t afford it.
“There is a huge concern that without insurance, people will delay seeking care, so one of the most important messages is that you don’t have to do this alone,” Rice said. “You have access to services. Staying engaged in your treatment is the most important. It absolutely saves you money in the long run.”
That’s why organizations like Northlakes Community Clinic encourage people to explore their options right away.
“They don’t have to go through open enrollment on their own,” Rice said. “There are a lot of people who can help you navigate the system and there are a lot of choices on the market.”
Rice said the ultimate goal is for everyone in the Chippewa Valley to have the coverage they need to get the care they need.
Rice said the staff at Northlakes Community Clinic is willing to help anyone struggling to navigate their options. There are also resources through . found, healthcare.govand cover wisconsin.
