N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is a powerful psychoactive molecule present in the brain and most plants around the world, but it may also protect humans from damage during stroke.
Scientists in Hungary have used this substance to reduce the harmful effects of stroke in animal models and cell culture experiments.
Known for causing life-changing experiences, including the perception of dimensional travel, ecological death, encounters with intelligent beings, and the feeling of achieving universal love with all living things, DMT can be found everywhere in nature and is actually produced endogenously in the human pineal gland.
A Hungarian team led by Professor Mária Deli, Professor Zoltán Nagy and Dr Sándor Nardai found that DMT treatment restored the structure and function of the damaged blood-brain barrier in rats that had suffered a stroke.
It also improved the function of astrocytes, suppressed the production of inflammatory cytokines in brain endothelial cells and peripheral immune cells, and significantly reduced infarct volume and edema formation. team published These results were published in the journal Science Advances.

Because current stroke treatments do not always result in complete recovery, DMT-based treatments may represent a promising new alternative, often combined with existing methods. Clinical trials have already begun overseas and research on the long-term effects of DMT is currently underway, but there is still a long way to go before it can be used in everyday medicine.
While most European countries, including Hungary, consider DMT a hallucinogenic drug and therefore controlled by strict criminal laws, the Netherlands and Portugal have taken a more open stance on DMT and the better-known ayahuasca, of which DMT is the active ingredient.
Approximately 800,000 strokes occur each year in the United States. In the most recent year for which data were collected, one in six (17.5%) deaths from cardiovascular disease were due to stroke. The cost of stroke increased to $56 billion that same year.
