Mitochondrial disease, a cruel and inherited state delivered to children, can turn life into a short and painful struggle. Think of it as a cell power. Mitochondria, a fine energy generator of our cells, and failure and results range from seizures to long -term failure and early death. It is a genetic curse that cannot be stopped. But it’s no longer.
In Newcastle, England, there is an innovative technology in which scientists combine the DNA of the mother and father with the third person’s healthy mitochondrial DNA.

This technology leads to 99.9 % of parents and 0.1 % of the gene of the donor. This genetic remixed baby can help to break the cycle of mitochondrial disease.
This technique, which has been legalized in the UK since 2015, is related to modifications from mothers and modifying other eggs from donors with their father’s sperm. Parents’ genetic substances are transplanted to the donor’s healthy embryo.
So far, 22 families have been in the process. Eight babies were born, including a pair of twins. All of them do not have mitochondrial diseases and are developing normally. Small health problems appeared. One has an epilepsy that has been solved by itself, and the other is a treatable heart rhythm problem, but experts do not think this is related to the procedure.
The fear of a slippery slope that tightens the “designer baby” and the unborn children continues, but parents who have lost their children or suffer from mitochondrial diseases may feel more hopeful.
Science still requires some things. Some children have the residual effect of mitochondria. But overall, it looks like a promising solution that parents do not want to convey to their children with family history of mitochondrial diseases.
