CT scans or CAT scans are widely used to obtain internal images of the body and to diagnose dangerous medical conditions, but can cause hidden risks.
According to a new study from the University of California -San Francisco, CT (Computed Tomography) scanes can account for 5%of all cancer diagnosis every year.
Fox News Digital, a UCSF radiologist and professor, said, “There is some uncertainty but it does not significantly affect the key conclusions, but it does not significantly affect the core conclusions, the author REBECCA Smith-Bindman, and the MD told the Fox News Digital.
Five cancer types that select screening finds most lives
According to the researcher’s estimates, the ionization radiation exposure of the CT scan is similar to other important risk factors, such as alcohol consumption and excessive weight.

According to Smith-Bindman, researchers have updated the previous analysis of data in 2023 for scan volume, scan types and radiation doses to predict the future cancer that can occur in the current CT scan.
“We used a well -proven model to estimate the risk of cancer and perform sensitivity analysis to confirm the robustness of the research results.”
“This is a modeling study, that is, our conclusion depends on the accuracy of the data used.”
Typical cancer types can be detected by new blood tests.
Based on the review, researchers estimate that about 103,000 future cancer is caused by the CT scan in 2023 in the United States, and the most cases of adults between 50 and 69 years old.
Personal cancer risks are the highest for babies and children, and babies under 1 year old are 10 times more likely to cause diseases than others.
But adults explain most of the scans, causing overall cancer burden, Smith-Bindman pointed out.
“CT dose is sometimes higher than necessary.”
Studies show that the most common cancer types of CT radiation include lung cancer, colon cancer, leukemia and breast cancer.
The study, which was published on April 14, was funded by the National Institute of Health.

The researcher said, “If the CT is clearly displayed, the advantage is much greater than the risk. (Istock)
Smith-Bindman told Fox News Digital, “In many cases, CT is the most appropriate test for achieving quick and accurate diagnosis.
“But the use of CT is about the increase in images performed without a legitimate medical reason (often called ‘low -cost scan’.”

Research results show that researchers should avoid unnecessary CT scans to avoid potential damage.
Another risk reduction approach is to lower the radiation capacity per scan.
Smith-Bindman said, “CT doses are sometimes higher than necessary, so patients are recommended to ask medical service providers and technicians to use the minimum dose available for scan.

“Small but meaningful cancer ratios are associated with CT scan and this number can be reduced.” (Istock)
Ultimately, the researchers said that patients should talk with medical service providers about the need for CT scan and whether alternative imaging options such as ultrasound or MRI are more appropriate.
“If the CT is clearly displayed, the advantage is much greater than the danger,” she said. “But if not, it’s best to avoid the scan completely.”
“You can be less in good patient treatment.”
Dr. Nicole Saphier, a board of directors and Fox News and Fox News Medical Contributor, mentioned the risks and advantages of CT scan, although not involved in this study.
“I have been advocating the careful use of medical images for a long time and often mentioned that it can be less in good patient treatment,” said Fox News Digital.
“A recent study that connects ionized radiation in an increase in risk of cancer in CT scan emphasizes what many people in the medical community have understanded for years. Imaging is a powerful diagnostic tool, but not at risk.”

Saphier said the research could underestimate the number of cancer from medical images.
“Cancer cases caused by many medical interventions may not be recognized by the fact that they omitted radiation from long waiting time, complex interactions and image induction procedures, X-rays and other medical radiation forms,” she said.

“As the use of imaging and medical intervention continues to increase, especially in the young population, cumulative radiation exposure in a lifetime is more important.”
In other words, SAPHIER continues to seek life every day with CT scan and “fast and inexpensive” other medical imaging.

“The core is a balance. The doctor should pay attention to the benefits of the risk, and always explore the alternative form if appropriate, such as ultrasound or MRI that does not use ionized radiation.”
According to a doctor, decision -making based on information is essential for both clinical and patients.

“We must continue to improve the protocol, limit unnecessary imaging, and check the diagnostic quality without damaging the diagnostic quality.”
“This is not a call to avoid CT scan. It is a request to use it wisely.”
