Eisenberg, who studied journalism at the University of Maryland and left her ideas about her creative writing, said, “I was a very practical child. Where is the idea of writing a novel from?
Around the summer of 2018, I accidentally found the author. JAMI Attenberg On Twitter. She started this initiative #1000wordsofsummer. The idea was to provide writers with a community of 1,000 words a day. At the end of two weeks, there are 14,000 words. If you are working on the first draft of the novel, it is better to roll the ball.
I participated for fun and it was helpful to start writing. I did not keep the book in mind. I was just writing a scene. I lived in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights and commuted to politics for about an hour. So I will sit on the subway and write on my notes app. Someone listens to interesting words and says, “It’s perfect. I want to change this to a scene or write stupid things.”
It was really nice to see words adding words. It will take 8 hours to give the reporter for 8 hours to write 1,000 words. But if you give 30 minutes, it takes 30 minutes.
What happened next time?
I challenged to write in a row in two summer. I was a New York City health care journalist in Politico, so I called every day with ICU nurses. I will go to the Javits Center and ask Cuomo Governor about Covid response. It was a very scary time. I was constantly talking with those who watched others dying.
I thought, “I want to write a book.” I felt like mortality. I was 26 years old, and if you have time to deal with this crisis in our city and have time to do what you want to do, it is now.
So I basically began to meet “women”. Very classic women in their 20s have found it in New York. There is no plot and there is only an atmosphere. I was just writing a little interesting conversation and little things about people. I felt as if I was absorbing my writing with the eyes of that journalism. But novels are fun. This is because you are just making things, without looking for 50 million sources to see if someone says something.
I was in favor of the book in April and abandoned the cobid book and hurt. I was lucky to sell my first book.
What other journalism techniques are translated or translated into novels?
I think journalists are well equipped with novels or nonfictions. The skills to be learned in the former are structure and plot. As a reporter, we have already got a drama for what happens in the world. We do not need to configure the plot twist.

Are you tired of writing next to your work?
As a reporter, I didn’t like the writing process. I liked my job because I reported. It was very rewarding to better understand what is happening and to inform the public.
In writing a novel, it is closer to compulsion. It doesn’t necessarily enjoy it while I’m doing it, but I’m better. I’m not a runner, but I think it’s the best of the runner. Many writers say they’re crazy if they don’t write. That is the way I always felt. If you don’t feel good, it’s probably because you didn’t use anything that day.
How did you get a book on your schedule?
In general, I got up, exercised, and started at Politico at 10 am. I usually ended between 8 pm and 10 pm. We took a break for dinner, but it is that kind of job. If the phone rings at 11 pm, I will answer.
Then my daily life is as follows: We will do a novel until 1 am at 10 pm. Before going to bed, you will be separated from the workplace and can sleep more. Instead of watching TV, I was sitting on a laptop or sitting with a laptop. If I’m having a hard time, the second hit 1,000 words. “Okay, I’m over.” But if I was in a flow state and had time in my life, I had time to work until I was tired.
How is the book publishing industry compared to journalism?
If you think slowly in journalism, add a year to publication.
In traditional novel publications, you write books on specifications. In other words, you need to use everything from start to finish. Then we start sending several sample pages to the agent for expression. This is called a query process. With that email, you briefly explain why your book, background, and readers should be interested in characters or stories.
In my question letter, I was also a health care journalist about how I dealt with many sexual assaults, sexual harassment and sexual illegality among politicians and doctors in New York City. “I have a professional knowledge to write sensitively, but I hope to think about it.”
I asked 12 agents. In the first month, six people asked me to read my manuscript. Then I haven’t heard anything for a year. I didn’t know it meant that they had passed or not yet read. That’s why experienced novelists always say, “It takes too long, so I do something else while waiting.” So I started working on the second novel.
How was this book published?
I teach NYU’s introduction to journalism classes, and one of the students who published a novel in high school started interns at a small publisher in Bleecker Street in Manhattan. They publish six books a year, and you do not need an agent to submit to them. That’s how my book is in my hand 3 rooms are pressed: My student said, “Can you send me a book?”
I didn’t think it was a way to sell a book, but she liked it. I met with publishers. They seemed great. Then they hired this amazing editor. Because I didn’t use the agent, my process was not traditional, but it was still considered to be a traditional author because it was not published in its own. Use a hybrid press.
Is there any other advice for journalists considering writing novels?
Write the terrible first draft. The first draft is actually talking to yourself, not the audience. The audience is difficult for journalists because we have a heart for us. If there are 400 words in the paper, you should be accurate and know exactly who you are using. However, if you use the book draft, it is much easier to think of the scene and think that the scene is a lame than seeing an empty page.
I also think that trusting myself is really important. If you are a reporter of trade, you are a great writer. You pay attention to human behavior. You know what you are talking about. All of them make a really interesting article. Now, you need to learn how to put it in a format that people can digest.
Of all defects, it is good. I’m interesting, strange, and good writing, but writing is good, but it’s not yet a structure that can be sold.
