Lisa Davis, CEO of Illinois House, has introduced a new legislation that can non -criminalize police officers if an attacker experiences a mental health episode.
Davis, a Democratic leader and lawyer at Cook County, introduced the Bill H3458, which revises the 2012 criminal law.
This bill allows an individual with documented mental illness to avoid legal measures to attack police officers if it is judged that he is experiencing mental health episodes at that time.
This bill says: “It is defensive that the battery worsens when an individual who is injured is a police officer, and the police officer responded to an interactive case with a person who believes that the police have a mental health episode. Also, the police officer must have documented mental illness and suddenly act.”
Lisa Davis suggests two co -sponsorships: Marcus Evans and Kelly Cassidy. Both are Democrats.
Currently, Illinoi’s law offers an attack on police officers and other first respondents, including firefighters. However, this bill specifically excludes non -criminalizing firefighters and other first respondents.
This bill was referred to the Illinois General Assembly Rules Committee and is considered unlikely to pass. A similar proposal was introduced in Virginia in 2023, but eventually failed.
